About St. Lucie County...

St Lucie County was given the name by the Spanish after they began construction of a fort on December 13, the feast day of the Roman Catholic St Lucia . The St Lucia colony was established in 1567 near Vero Beach and Stuart. In the 1900s the Anglo-Saxon version of St Lucie was identified.
During the 2nd Seminole, the US Army set up posts in the state and in 1837 Colonel Benjamin Pierce sailed Indian River from St Augustine southward and 1 year later he built a fort out of Palmetto trees near Ais Indian Mound known now as Old Fort park.
In 1894 the 1st steam locomotive on the Florida east coast rail way came to Ft Pierce. With rail expansion, it helped to create a population boom in the area and helped to transport pineapples from Cuba.
On July 1st 1905 St Lucie county was established with Ft Pierce as the county seat. Prior to that this area was part of Broward County.
The County now has 600 square miles with 2 cities and 1 village, Ft Pierce, Port St Lucie, and St Lucie Village. 270,000 people call it home and it is one of the fastest growing areas in the state of Florida. It has 21 miles of untouched beaches and is the crown jewel of the treasure coast.
St. Lucie county offers many different styles of living from golf course communities to beach front mansions to affordable housing for all. With Scripps locating in Palm Beach county there are numerous spin off bio-science companies locating here. Port St. Lucie is the spring training home for the New York Mets.
